WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) is the international standard for web accessibility. WCAG 2.1 AA is the legal minimum requirement in most countries for public-facing websites.
WCAG AA requires a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text (18pt+ or 14pt+ bold). WCAG AAA requires 7:1 and 4.5:1 respectively.
Low contrast text is hard to read for users with low vision, color blindness, or in bright sunlight. Good contrast improves readability for all users.
